Grief Caused By War In “Mieko And The Fifth Treasure” By Eleanor Coerr

This study is built upon the analysis of “Mieko and the Fifth Treasure” by Eleanor Coerr, a work of literature that addresses different post-war reactions
in children. This study aimed to discover the changes caused by World War II towards Mieko and her ways in coping with those changes, by making use
of the theory of grief postulated by David Kessler and Kübler-Ross (2005; 2019). This research employed descriptive-interpretive qualitative and online
library approaches to analyze the data. The data is collected from the narration of all characters and the author’s image in describing the changes in the main
character, Mieko. The findings revealed that at first, Mieko’s response in handling the aftermath of the war was completely negative. She became
desperate to do calligraphy because of the condition of her hand. However, in the end, Mieko realized that she needed to cool off from those negativities by
believing that there was always someone nearby to support her and help her find again her lost hope in calligraphy. The meaning behind this study was to
share the importance of providing psychological support for those who have experienced the grief of war within personal or social life.
