Rhetorical Moves in an Introduction Part of Undergraduate Thesis in English Department of Widya Kartika University from the Year of 2013 until 2016

This research highlights the importance of academic writing in academic discourse which is thesis. This study examines the introduction part of undergraduate thesis of students in English Department of Widya Kartika University. Thus, the statements of the problems are how the background of the study compared to Swales’ CARS template and what the inconsistent moves are, according to Swales’ CARS. Then, discourse analysis and lexical phrase is used to analyze the data collected. Furthermore, the findings show two things. First, no one followed the flow of Swales’ CARS and only a few of the backgrounds contain all the moves. Second, the tendency of the introductions that contain generalization more than needed and missed to put the important information in it.
