Male and Female Linguistic Features Used by Successful American Stand Up Comedians


Stand Up Comedy is one of popular entertainment in the world. Performing Stand Up Comedy is quite challenging. It is successful, people will laugh and if it is unsuccessful, the performance becomes bored. In Indonesia, none of Stand Up Comedians This study is aimed to find out the differences between male and female linguistic features used by successful American Stand Up Comedians and the impressions of male and female linguistic features used by successful American Stand Up Comedians. This research use Robin Lakoff’s (1975) theory about male and female linguistic features and Grice’s (1975) theory about implicature. This study use qualitative research method. The data of this research is the utterances which are taken from transcriptions of Stand Up Comedy performance’s which are performed by: Amy Schumer, Maria Bamford, Tig Notaro, Dana Carvey, Gabriel Iglesias, and Trevor Noah; and people’s comment in YouTube’s review column. The result is that successful American male Stand Up Comedians tend more dominant to use tag question, swear word, vocabulary (adjective, adverb, and color words), modulation, pronoun, and imperative sentence. Otherwise, successful American female Stand Up Comedians tend more dominant to use signal forms, diminutive words, and pronunciation [-ing]. By doing this, people tend to like their performance because their jokes are funny, and they are amazing and hilarious on the stage.
