Feminism and Rebellion Of Ailin As Seen In Lensey Namioka’s “Ties That Bind, Ties That Break”


Feminism is a range of political movements ideologies, and social movements that share a common goal to define, establish and achieve. In the real life women are differentiated with men in their rights. Women are not fully allowed to gain their right as men do. The inequality can be be in forms of education, political right, or economical and position chance. The purpose of this research is to find out the feminism element which are reflected in the novel, secondly is to find out the factors causing Ailin to struggle based in theory of feminism, and the last is to find out the impacts on Ailin’s action in society. Literary theory and criticism are applied as an approach to analyze the problems in the novel. The literary theory here is used to help exploring the characters, the events that happened in the novel, conflicts, and setting. While criticism is a theory which used to analyze the main characte as the purpose of the study. The result of the study showed that (1) The novel “Ties that bind, ties that break” has some feminism elements. (2) The factors that are caused her to struggle are her childhood experience, the cultures from ancient China that her family hold hereditary, and the internal factors in Ailin herself as she seek an equality in society. (3) The impacts that Ailin takes as the responsibility from her action in rebellion.
