The Portrayal of a Transgender’s Self – Image in Julie Anne Peters’ Luna
This research focuses on analysing the phenomenon of LGBT especially transgender. The phenomenon has been a conflict in society because transgender people persue equality and the recognition among citizens. This phenomenon is also portrayed in literary work, a novel titled Luna. The aims of this research are to find out how the main character can bee seen as a transgender, how the main character built his self-image as a transgender and the impact of self - image as transgender to another main character’s psychology. This research uses psychoanalysis approach and three theories. The first is psychosexual development theory, the second theory is self-image theory and the last is anti-social theory. The results show that main character can be seen as a transgender from his psychosexual stages. The main character failed on phallic and genital stages. The failure on those stages to children results in the failure to know their genders. This research found that the main character who failed in phallic stage and genital stage experienced gender disorder. The failure on those stages results in a tendency to feminine behaviours and feelings in which later on give impact also to the main character’s self image. The main character lost his masculinity. The impact of the main character as a transgender toward another main character leads into anti–social behaviour.
