This is a study on alienation in Charles Dickens’s Oliver Twist. The major character in the work used experiences alienation, which can be noticed through his utterances, dialogues, expressions, and actions, or the author’s narration. Ali-enation is a feeling that affects anybody and can cause many problems, both phy-sically and mentally. The objectives of this thesis are to analyze the forms of his alienation and find out its causes. This research explains the indications and trig-gers of this feeling, so that it can be identified and anticipated. Two theories are employed to answer the problems, namely Melvin Seeman’s alienation and Abra-ham Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. The former provides five dimensions of alien-ation: powerlessness, meaninglessness, normlessness, isolation, and self-estrange-ment, and the latter constructs five human needs: physiological, safety, love, es-teem, and self-actualization needs. In carrying out this research, the following me-thods are involved: reading, data collecting, data classifying, and analyzing. There are two findings of this research: loneliness, feeling of rejection, distress, fear and anxiety, and desperation are the forms of the major character’s alienation, and the causes are lack of figures of good neighbors, social rejection, unfairness, bad treatment, social depravity, rights denial, and dehumanization.

Key words: alienation, Charles Dickens, Oliver Twist
