Psychological disorders reflected in hamlet’s character by Shakespeare’s Hamlet

William Shakespeare is a famous English playwright, poet, and actor, widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language. One of the most famous Shakespeare’s works is Hamlet. It tells about the story of the Prince of Denmark in Elsionare Kingdom who suffers from psychological disorders and abnormal behaviors. This study has two statements of the problems, (1) What kinds of psychological Disorder suffered by Hamlet? (2) How is the influence of Hamlet’s psychological disorders toward another character, Ophelia?. This objective of the study is to find out the effect of Hamlet’s psychological disorder toward another character, Ophelia, Hamlet’s lover. Some methods to analyze the play are applied in the research methodology, such as research design, source of data, technique of collecting data and technique of data analysis. Library research is applied to analyze this study from quotations, utterances and conversations. The primary data used is the play of Hamlet by Shakespeare. Two theories are applied, first, psychoanalysis theory by Sigmund Freud with the basic concept the structure of mind: the unconscious mind, the second Ernest Jones’ theory of Oedipus complex. Literary theories are used character & characterization and conflict. Those theoretical frameworks are applied to reveal the conflicts appear in the play which connected with Hamlet’s psychology. By using the Freud’s psychoanalytic theory, the writer concludes that Hamlet’s psychological disorders take control his mind and behavior. To express his feeling of hatred and pain, Hamlet committed many abnormal things and he did not think about the effects of his action.
